EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS IN KĖDAINIAI REGIONAL MUSEUM

SECRETS OF THE NEVĖŽIS VALLEY

During the training sightseeing tour, pupils visit the Sirutiškis manor house and a park – a birth place of Cz. Milosz’s grandparents, Kalnaberžė – a manor house and a park of P. Stolypin and K. Binkis, Paberžė – the 1863 Revolt Museum and the Šilingas manor, the Museum of Clerical Outfits of Father Stanislovas, Krekenava – a church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary into Heaven, a place of Maironis pastorate, Pašiliai – Lithuania’s only reservation of the European bisons, Šventybrastis – a valley of the 1863 rebels, Šeteniai – a cultural centre of the Noble Prize winner Cz. Milosz, Apytalaukis – a manor palace of historicism style of the counts Zabielos, Kėdainiai – a minaret. During the sightseeing tour, pupils complete workbooks, containing tasks that require historical, literature and biology knowledge. The program is for pupils of the 5th – 12th classes. Duration – 6 hours.

KĖDAINIAI –  A LAND OF MIKALOJUS DAUKŠA AND CZESLAW MILOSZ

During the workshop, pupils read creation of M. Daukšą and Lithuanian poets of the Renaissance period; fragments from an ethnographic essay by writer M. Katkus ‘Balanos gadynė’, fragments of Cz. Milosz autobiographical novel ‘The Isa Valley’ and of a novel by J. Paukštelis ‘Neighbors’; after that, pupils analyze fragments of movies created on a basis of the mentioned works and selecting the most typical characters of the mentioned authors works in order to create reenactment and play a puzzle game. The program is for pupils of the 8th – 12th classes. Duration – 2 hours.

WHAT THE STONE AXE TELLS

Pupils visit the exposition of archaeology, watch a video fragment ‘Vikings’ Festival’, measure, draw archaeological exhibits, solve crossword puzzles. Duration – 1 hours. The workshop is for primary classes pupils.

 

THE STORIES OF OLD THINGS

During the workshop, pupils learn how to roll linen towel, to carry wooden buckets with a yoke, try wooden clogs, solve riddles, say proverbs and draw things they like mostly. Duration – 1 hour. The workshop is for primary classes pupils.

LIFE IN A MANOR

Pupils get familiarized with history and culture of Kėdainiai region manors, visit expositions dedicated for manors, write letters in the 17th-19th c. style using quills, learn the fan language, try the manor accessories.

The workshop is for pupils in upper years and adults. Duration – 1 to 1,5 hour.

ONE DAY IN THE MIDDLE AGES TOWN

Pupils get familiarized with history of the Big Market, draw sketches of the most important architectural monuments: town hall, Evangelic Reformed church, glaziers’ houses, walk around backyards of the old town. Duration – 1 hour. The workshop is for primary classes pupils.

BOOKLEGGERS’ WAYS

Pupils get familiarized with bookleggers of Kėdainiai region, their dangerous life, secret schools, solve crossword puzzles, read texts of the end of the 19th c, play games. Duration – 1 hour. The workshop is for primary classes pupils.

HISTORY OF THE RADZIWILLS FAMILY

Pupils examine the history of the noblemen family, their traditions, customs, analyze meaning of family names, draw ornamentation of the Radziwills sarcophaguses. Duration – 1 hour. The workshop is for pupils of the 5th – 12th classes.

THE ANCIENT COAT-OF-ARMS OF LITHUANIA AND KĖDAINIAI

The pupils get familiarized with the ancient coat-of-arms of Lithuanian towns, draw coat-of-arms of Kėdainiai and Jonušava, create their own sketches of coat-of-arms. Duration – 1 hour. The workshop is for pupils of the 3rd – 10th classes.

DEPORTATION AND THE PARTISAN MOVEMENT IN KĖDAINIAI REGION

Pupils get familiarized with life of deportees and partisans, read their letters, watch photographs from collections of Kėdainiai Regional Museum, listen to songs and poesy of deportees and partisans. Duration – 1 hour. The workshop is for pupils of the 8th – 12th classes.

 

THE URBAN CULTURE OF KĖDAINIAI

A sightseeing tour around Kėdainiai old town (the Big Market, town hall, Evangelic Reformed church, the Arnets’ house) and work with archaeological findings in an educational classroom of the Regional Museum. Pupils try clothes of the Renaissance style, read fragments of the 17th c. literature works.

The workshop is for pupils in upper years and adults. Duration – 2 hours.

 

THE ANCIENT FOLK SCULPTURE. THE SYMBOL OF A CROSS

Pupils get familiarized with the small folk sculpture, wayside shrines, crosses by V. Svirskis. Duration – 1 hour. The workshop is for pupils of the 4th – 12th classes.

 

ANNE FRANK – A HISTORY FOR TODAY

Pupils get familiarized with circumstances of the Holocaust, watch a movie ‘Dear Kitty’, read fragments of the diary. Duration – 1 hour. The workshop is for pupils of the 8th – 10th classes.

 

THE SECRETS OF TEA

Pupils have a view of a collection of ancient kettles, get familiarized with tea drinking traditions of various countries, try Lithuanian teas of various types. Duration – 1 hour. The workshop is for primary classes pupils.

 

LIFE BEHIND THE IRON CURTAIN. KĖDAINIAI DURING THE SOVIET PERIOD

Pupils get familiarized with specialities of the soviet life, contrasts of young people life, watch short films of ‘Mėgėjas’ studio about the soviet Kėdainiai.

The workshop is for pupils in upper years. Duration – 1 hour.

 

KĖDAINIAI DURING THE PERIOD OF TWO REPUBLICS: 1918-1940 AND 1990-2016

Pupils get familiarized with the town’s history during the interwar and rebirth periods, create installation of the town face.

The workshop is for pupils in upper years. Duration – 1 hour.

 

A ROAD OF RYE

Pupils get familiarized with agricultural tools, learn to sow using a seedlip, to distinguish corn of various species, try bread of various types, solve crossword puzzles. Duration – 1 hour. The workshop is for primary classes pupils.

SECRETS OF GRAPHIC ART

Participants of the program “Secrets of Graphic Art in the Museum of Janina Monkutė-Marks” are introduced to the personality of the emigrant, Janina Monkutė-Marks, her creative path and the history of the museum named after her. Janina Monkutė-Marks’s favorite graphic art technique – embossing – is discussed and a collection of original linoleum and woodcut prints created by the artist is viewed. The graphic technique – embossing and its subtleties are discussed. During the practical session, students are encouraged to create individual graphic carvings – embossing and make 1-2 prints on a sheet of paper using a spoon. All created prints are taken by the students as a souvenir. The program is carried out in the exhibition halls of the Janina Monkutė-Marks Museum-Gallery, surrounded by the works of the founder of the museum, which put the program participants in a positive mood and help their creativity to unfold.

OUTGOING PROGRAM “SECRETS OF GRAPHIC ART”

 

Participants of the outgoing program “Secrets of Graphic Art in the Museum of Janina Monkutė-Marks” are introduced to the personality of the emigrant Janina Monkutė-Marks, her creative path and the history of the museum named after her. TEMPLES OF THE RELIGIOUS CONFESSIONS

An educational sightseeing tour around the Catholic, Protestants, Orthodox and Judaism temples. During the tour, similarities and differences are explained. Pupils perform tasks in tasks’ sheets. Practical workshop in the Multicultural Centre analyzing artefacts of the religious confessions. Duration – 2 hours. The workshop is for pupils of the 8th – 12th classes.

 

THE HOLOCAUST

During the workshop, the reasons of the Holocaust are discussed, its execution peculiarities in Europe and Lithuania. Pupils watch and discuss fragments of a movie ‘Ambulance’, do practical tasks, discuss. Duration – 1 hour. The workshop is for pupils of the 8th – 12th classes.

 

SHTETL AND TRADITIONS

A sightseeing tour around Kėdainiai old town, revealing particularity of the Jews life in towns of Lithuania. A practical workshop in the Multicultural Centre, analyzing a special Jewish feast – Sabbath, related customs and used items (kippah, Sabbath candles, kiddushin cups). Pupils try matzo and grape juice. Duration – 1,5 hours. The workshop is for pupils of the 5th – 12th classes.

 

THE MULTICULTURAL KĖDAINIAI REGION

The program introduces pupils to the national communities that lived in our region and their famous people. Pupils read Russian and Polish texts, reflecting culture of Kėdainiai region manors of the 19th century and early years of the 20th century. The written heritage of various nations and religious confessions is illustrated by samples of fine art and architecture, explaining important symbols. Duration – 1,5 hours. The workshop is for pupils of the 5th – 12th classes.

 

THE RIGHTEOUS AMONG THE NATIONS. WHO ARE THEY?

During the workshop, Jews salvation difficulties during the second World War, rescuers personalities and their destinies are discussed. Pupils watch fragments of a movie ‘The Holocaust in Kėdainiai Region’. Duration – 1 hour. The workshop is for pupils of the 8th – 12th classes.

 

‘AND THERE ONCE LIVED JEWS’

During the educational sightseeing tour, visitors visit settlements of Kėdainiai region, where large Jewish communities had lived before the second World War (Josvainiai, Krakės, Dotnuva, Šėta). Visitors get familiarized with history of those settlements, visit survived signs of the Jewish heritage, cemeteries, mass killing sites.

Duration – 6 hours.

 

‘THE MANORS OF KĖDAINIAI REGION: REFLECTIONS OF A GREAT PAST’

During the educational sightseeing tour, visitors visit a monument dedicated for the first perished volunteer P. Lukšys in Taučiūnai village, also visit manors of Stasinė, Lančiūnava, Pavermenis as well as an exposition of Krekenava regional park, have an eyeful of Terespolis manors house of Art Nouveau style and walk around Dotnuva manor park. Duration – 6 hours.

WEAVING

Visitors get familiarized with weaving history, flax processing tools, spinning wheel and loom. Visitors will learn to twist threads using a spinning wheel and a bobbin. The training is conducted by a master of the certified national heritage crafts Milda Petraitienė. Duration 1 hour. Number of participants up to 10 persons. The training is for pupils and adults.

 

WEAVING OF SASHES

Visitors will have a great opportunity to get familiarized with one of the most authentic craft of Aukštaitija – weaving of sashes (twisted, bound and woven sashes), customs related with national sashes in Lithuanian culture, their colors, patterns, symbolism and adaptation in daily life. Participants of the training will be able to weave a traditional sash. The training is conducted by a master of the certified national heritage crafts Loreta Steponavičienė. Duration 1 hour. Number of participants up to 10 persons. The training is for pupils and adults.

 

CERAMICS

Visitors get familiarized with traditions and history of the Lithuanian folk ceramics and potter’s craft. During the practical training, visitors will try various traditional ways of pottery and pottery equipment. Visitors will learn to make a ceramic item. The training is conducted by a ceramicist Dalė Urbienė. Duration 1 hour. Number of participants up to 10 persons. The training is for pupils and adults.

 

PLAITING WITH WICKER

Visitors get familiarized with particularity of wicker growing, material preparation and plaiting technology. Visitors will learn plaiting craft and will be able to plait a souvenir. The training is conducted by a master of the certified national heritage crafts Birutė Šinkūnienė. Duration 1 hour. Number of participants up to 10 persons. The training is for pupils and adults.

 

CARVING

Visitors get familiarized with a tree image in the Lithuanian world-view, cross-crafting customs in Lithuania, tools used in carving, samples of products and technological processes. Visitor will try to make a traditional wooden item. The training is conducted by a traditional craftsman of the certified national heritage products Audrius Vasiliauskas. Duration 1 hour. Number of participants up to 10 persons. The training is for pupils and adults.

 

DECORATION OF THE EASTER EGGS WITH WAX

The trainings will be conducted two weeks before and one week after Easter.

Visitors get familiarized with the Easter customs, decoration of the Easter table and Easter eggs decoration techniques, symbols, ornaments. Visitors will be able to decorate Easter eggs by the traditional inherited decoration method, using natural wax. The training is conducted by a master of the certified national heritage crafts Birutė Šinkūnienė. Duration 1,5 hours. Number of participants up to 15 persons. The training is for pupils and adults.

 

FULLING

Visitors get familiarized with history of wool, types, fulling technologies, application. Visitors, making their own felt toy, will try natural therapy, proven by antecedents. An age of the training visitors is not limited. The training is conducted by a master of the certified national heritage crafts Jūratė Atkočiūnienė. Duration 1 hour. Number of participants up to 12 persons. The training is for pupils and adults.

 

RAG DOLL

Visitors get familiarized with history and production methods of rag dolls, particularities of Lithuania regions national suits. Visitors will make a rag doll, using elements of the national suit. The age of the training participants from 5 to 16 years old. Duration 1 hour. Number of participants up to 12 persons. The training is for pupils and adults.

 

CUT-OUT PAPER DECORATIONS

During the training, visitors get familiarized with historical development of cut-out paper decorations, traditions and application. Visitors will be able to cut-out traditional small curtains, corners, pictures, post-cards, decorations for Christmas trees. The age of the training participants from 7 years old. Duration 1 hour. Number of participants up to 15 persons. The training is for pupils and adults.

 

PROGRAMS OF THE INFORMAL CHILDREN EDUCATION OF THE CENTRE OF TRADITIONAL CRAFTS, THE ARNETS’ HOUSE

From February, the Centre of Traditional Crafts, the Arnets’ House of Kėdainiai Regional Museum continues to implement 6 programs of the informal education for children that are being visited by 89 pupils from secondary schools of Kėdainiai town and district. Pupils will get familiarized with crafts, their history, dissemination across the world, the Balts symbolism in the Lithuanian folk art, learn various technologies and how to apply them in a particular craft. During the trainings, pupils will have a possibility to communicate and cooperate, thus developing their public spirit, national identity, ability to think creatively as well as they will be encouraged to interest in the national heritage and ancient traditional crafts. The programs are financed by administration of Kėdainiai district municipality.
